Laughter Matters – Do the Right Thing
I hope you had a great weekend. Friday is the birthday of our 33rd president, Harry Truman. I am proud to have grown up 45 miles away from Truman’s hometown of Independence, MO and agree with AJ Baime, author of The Accidental President, that Truman is one of our great leaders. This week, as our country begins reopening from the coronavirus, I want to examine the traits that made President Truman great.
I have mentioned before, President Truman studied the issues and did what he thought was right, regardless of the personal consequences. Just months before the presidential election in 1948, President Truman desegregated the military. His advisor, Clark Clifford, said, “It is the right thing to do, but it is the wrong time. It will cause you to lose the election.”
Truman said, “I would rather be right than president.”
It did not cost him the election, but, even if it had, he would have accepted the consequences because he believed it to be the right decision.
We have plenty who do what is expedient or that which profits them personally. Today on Management Monday, I want to remind all leaders, do what you know is right. Not only will you sleep better, like Harry Truman, you will go down on the right side of history.
Have a great week, wash your hands, and always remember laughter matters.
